Business Description:
Since, 1978, Grover Brown of AB Intro-Spect has been proudly helping homeowners protect their investment by educating them not only on the condition of their house at the time of purchase, but also how to maintain its value in the long run.  He tailors each inspection to the individual needs of his clients, going far beyond a simple list of defects.   Grover comes from a family of builders and contractors…this business is in his blood.  His approach is simple: It’s not an inspection.  It’s an education.  Grover walks you through every step of the process for lasting peace of mind.

What first inspired you to get into your line of work? And what motivates you to do the work you do still today?
Education! I love educating people on how to take care of their home. For most people their home is the most expensive investment they will ever make and they have no clue on how to maintain it. In fact most people do not even know what needs to be maintained and when they find out they become overwhelmed. However, once they are educated and know how to maintain it, they are usually much more comfortable and more likely to actually do it. It’s sort of like that with our walk with Christ. Most of us are completely oblivious to the effect of sin in our lives. Once we become aware of what sin has done we become overwhelm with our need for a Savior but we are confused and/or disoriented of how to actually walk that out. I love helping people see how Our Father longs to personally come along side of and even send HIS Spirit to help us.

How did you come to faith in Christ?
I have always been a believer but not always a disciple of Christ. With that said, I have not shared the full details of my coming to faith in Christ with many people because of the graphic content. The depravity of the human soul is gut-wrenching. But the message of the Cross and the Love of Christ Jesus has brought redemption in ways I never dreamed of. How did I come to faith in Christ? I didn’t. He came to me. Man cannot come to Christ until Christ has come to them. No one can come to Christ except the Father draw them. Ephesians 2:8-9 makes it very clear. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. Most people understand God’s grace as a gift but they miss the truth that the real gift from God is the very faith we need to receive the grace of HIS salvation. So how did I come to faith in Christ? By, through and in HIS gift of faith. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek HIM.

How does your faith impact the way you do business?
It is humbling, especially when I stop to think that I am representing the King of Kings and everything they see in me they imagine this is how Christ is. I take very seriously the scripture “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, rather than for people.” I pray over every house and for all those involved knowing God loves each and every one of them not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

What ministry/cause do you champion and why?
If I had to pick just one cause it would be the Pro Life cause. All humanity is at the center of why Our Father created this world and to show any disregard for human life is to show disregard and even contempt for God Himself. With this in mind, if I had to choose just one ministry it would be Answers in Genesis. It is foundational to everything the Bible declares starting with Creation itself, Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God” created through Revelation 22:21 “The grace of Our LORD Jesus be with all the saints. Amen.” Answers in Genesis has two outstanding attractions including Noah’s Ark built to scale and the Creation Museum which houses one of the most cutting edge Pro-Life display “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made” exhibit.

Business Description:
Sayre Heating & Cooling provides residential heating and cooling service and replacements.

What first inspired you to get into your line of work? And what motivates you to do the work you do still today?
It was always appealing to me to be in business with my dad. In 1988 we talked and decided that we could do heating and cooling. I liked the idea of being able to fix things as well as helping people out with a problem they were facing in their home.

How did you come to faith in Christ?
My parents are both born again Christians. I was raised in a Christian house old all my life. When I was 5 years old I realized I needed a savior. I had asked my Sunday school teacher if I could pray with her after class. She of course said yes and I asked Jesus to come into my heart and save me.  This was at Fellowship Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio in 1974. I am so thankful for my Sunday school teacher being willing to listen to me at such a young age. I am also eternally grateful to my parents for being that Godly example and for telling me of Jesus and reading the Bible to me every night before bed time. I see how God used all these people to influence me for Christ early on.

How does your faith impact the way you do business?
We do our best to be an example and Godly influence in business. It doesn’t mean we are perfect or don’t make mistakes. It means that we will fix our mistakes and learn from them. We also strive to be honest and fair about everything we do. The attitude is to do all work to honor God. I believe we are working to please God and that should show in our work.

What ministry/cause do you champion and why?
The LORD always provides people in my life to invest in. God has allowed me to help multiple people out in many different ways. Whether they needed prayer, a shoulder to cry on, or financial help, there is always someone in your life that can use your help. I believe that God has given me the heart to help people. I enjoy giving more than receiving. I have learned that when you are a willing vessel God puts people in your path. The goal is to be sensitive to the calling of the Holy Spirit.

Fred and Netta Martin uniquely decided to bring a new fresh cleaning business/ideal to life and started by naming it Fast and Neat Services LLC, representing the first letters of their names, and adding services that we can stand by.   They launched their business from the ground up, focusing on Residential, Commercial, Small Business, and Storefront Post Construction Clean up Industries.  Their business focuses on their clients’ needs, so with every walkthrough, they promise you a great experience, budget-friendly prices, and top-of-the-line cleaning products that are safe for the environment, their clients, and the fur babies, if any.

What first inspired you to get into your line of work? And what motivates you to do the work you do still today?

We combined our family early in our relationship… Fred and I knew our careers and retirement days were fastly approaching, and making business moves for our future seemed perfect.  We pondered over being business owners and entrepreneurs for a year, and I then finally took the ultimate leap of faith and left my 14-year career in Law Enforcement, and scaled myself down to a 9-5 schedule to put a master plan together to grow our cleaning business.  The main reason we decided to open a cleaning business was that we both had been in the industry, and we both love to be in a clean and healthy space/environment ourselves, and wanted to help others to keep their space clean and healthy as well. Lastly, there were not a lot of small black-owned cleaning businesses in our area that handled Move in/Move out, one-time clean, and reoccurring cleaning, like ours.

How did you come to faith in Christ?

Netta:  I was led to Christ by truth, training, and teaching from the churches I attended as a little girl. That led to my adulthood and transformed me into the woman that I am today. I was led to believe a long time ago that if someone asks about my hope and faith as a believer, I should always be ready to explain it. (1Pet 3:15). I first came to believe that I was a sinner, so I started reading the book of Romans. I knew I had sinned and fallen short (Romans 3:23), but God demonstrated His own love for me while I yet sinned, I had to believe Christ died for me (Rom 5:8). I knew God Loved Me no matter what.
Fred’s journey to Christ was different than mine… he knew for his children that he needed to set an example of a God-fearing man, and he knew “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” Rom 6:23. Fred knew his salvation was a gift from God – it wasn’t anything he could earn, and he knew he had to work hard to keep it. Fred knew he wanted to show God he appreciated the gift, through Love, Service, and sharing his faith with others.

How does your faith impact the way you do business?

We believe that the Holy Spirit works within… we came together by Faith, and are led by Faith.  It was our faith together that moved Netta to decide to walk away from a 14-year career in Law Enforcement for several reasons, but most importantly, it hindered me from church and time with the Lord (and with my understanding of God and the Holy Bible). As I grew into the word of God, mountains were easily moved and God was ever so present in my home, in our lives, and in our business decisions.  Our business was founded on faith and faith alone. We never thought entrepreneurship was arising.  Just as Netta studied the word of God, she also studied the ins and outs of our business. We are making sure we grow our business from the ground up, with all the above inspiration and purpose God is granting us.  Just like the purpose God put us here on earth, we are putting into our business, starting with an advertisement here in a Christian-based publication. Thank You Markina McNight (NSM)  for leading us to the Christian Blue Pages, and thank you, Brian Hegyi from Christian Blue as well

Please share a story where you saw God move in your business or impact a customer.

We asked God to live in our hearts early on in our marriage, so we knew our business had to have a foundation as such. We knew the moment that once we launched our business on social media that we were going to need the Holy Spirit to watch over us and watch over our business as it grows. We launched in January 2020, just as Covid-19 became a world pandemic.  It was a frightening time to start a business and watch it grow.  I remember going into my prayer room (bathroom) and talking to God for 30 minutes, crying at a business that had not failed. I went to bed with another prayer on my heart. I asked God to show us what needs to be done because one week went past, then the next week went past, and not one phone call, not one interest in social media.  A few nights later we decided to go ahead and get the business its own phone number (937-750-8642).  I took the number 8642 and said these letters stand for (TMGC) – Trust Me God Coming!  So Wednesday came, and I had a ministry lead meeting at the church. Our pastor said there will be noticeable changes within the church, starting with the cleaning of the church, and he said we will be looking for another company to come to clean our church. I sat there incredibly quiet, and never uttered that we just launched our cleaning business called Fast and Neat Services LLC, and that we could do it. I got home, told Fred, and he said “What do we need to do?” I said, “Let us pray on it”, which was my way of saying “I do not know.” I then had a dream come to me saying, “Reach out to the Elder of the church and tell him”, so I called and set up a walk-through. Two months went past and the pandemic was in full swing, when we finally got a call from the church, “Can your company do a deep clean of the church?” “YES!”, I said.  We took on the task, and then bid for the contract, and got it. A few days later, I prayed and said, “God, what now?” So, we posted again on social media, and this time our post was liked and shared, and people/businesses were being tagged, asking for our number.  Now I believe it was God who interceded, just as I began to have thoughts of giving up on the business and going back to policing. The very next day, we got a phone call from a salon, set up our walk-through, and this time, we corrected the mistakes we made from the first walkthrough, and got the job! I then went into my prayer room (bathroom) and said, “Lord, I don’t want to go back to Law Enforcement… I love the freedom that I have. Please direct me differently, not only with the business but with another source of income. I then walked into this law firm, and came out hired, knowing nothing but God!

Moving forward into the business, we got a call and set up a walkthrough for a business that was worth $1.5 million.  This business wanted to cut corners on the cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing of the location. Now because I strongly felt about the old saying “cleanliness is next to godliness”, we could not see our business cutting corners and not cleaning a high-profile business as such. So, we learned several valuable lessons that sustain us to this day in our business. We will only grow and hire people that have a passion for life and work.

We are a Christian-owned coffee shop located in the heart of a little community called Saint Bernard, about 6 miles from downtown Cincinnati. We offer coffee, and espresso-based drinks along with a variety of other pre-packaged drinks. We also offer pastries, bagels, and breakfast sandwiches for the morning, and sandwiches and soup on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September through April. We provide indoor and outdoor seating, along with a cozy and relaxing environment for you to sit, read, and enjoy community, or even study. We make sure every customer is treated like family and enjoy getting to know our regular customers. We welcome everyone, from kids to the elderly, and even our four-legged friends as well. We make sure to sugar up the kids, give dog treats, then send you on your way!

What first inspired you to get into your line of work? And what motivates you to do the work you do still today?
I (Carolyn) actually helped out here before when it was an existing coffee shop under a different name and ownership. The previous owners were having some health issues, and the shop was going to close. We felt it was a very important part of this community, and hated to see it close up. So along with another couple, we purchased it, renamed it, and rebranded it. We’ve been going strong since April of 2018.

How did you come to faith in Christ?
For me (Carolyn), I was 12 years old when I accepted Christ at my home church in our youth department. I had been raised in this church since I was 9 months old. I also attended a private Christian school for 6 years, so I was aware of who our Lord and Savior was and still is.
Ron was 15 years old and gave his heart to Christ at a revival we were having at our church. We actually met at church in the youth department and were friends. We grew up and then went our separate ways for 15 years until we were given the chance to come back together, then marry.  We have been married for 17 years now, with a blended family.

How does your faith impact the way you do business?
We feel that being here in the community, we are a safe haven for people; plus, it gives us the opportunity for outreach throughout the community. I had already been heavily involved with community service within our school district, church, and honor society.  We have found a purpose within this community, and hope we at least can help others. We feel the need here with the children of the schools and do not like to see them go hungry or go without

What ministry/cause do you champion and why?
We support several different aspects of the community, from the food pantry at local churches to all the schools around us. We help collect food, coats and winter apparel, and school supplies, as well as items for our senior citizens. We do not like to see people go without, and know how lucky we are to be given this opportunity. We only hope we can grow even more.

We will do everything we can to ensure that our patients are comfortable. We are proud to help people heal after an accident or injury and diminish any unwanted discomfort.

What first inspired you to get into your line of work? And what motivates you to do the work you do still today?
My mom was a nurse and my step dad was a doctor. He had suffered low back pain for years and had 2 back surgeries
I watched him suffer from the pain.  I did not know how much back pain someone could suffer

My personal story is as follows…I had jumped on a roof at 13 years old, and broke my back in 2 places. At 17, I was competing in surfing in California and suffered tremendous back pain. I found a grocery store receipt, and on the back was a coupon for a Free exam and xrays at a Chiropractic office. I went, and let me tell you it felt so good and changed my life.

I later became a massage therapist and then decided to become a chiropractor. I love being a chiropractor and working with my hands to help people feel better, move better and live better lives with chiropractic and living a healthy lifestyle.

How did you come to faith in Christ?
When I met my wife and became a chiropractor, I thought I should check out Christianity. I went to a Promise Keepers Event in Oakland, California, and Billy Graham gave an altar call for anyone who wanted to receive Christ, that they could do that now. I walked forward in faith and gave my life to Christ.

How does your faith impact the way you do business?
It is everything to me. I feel that it is the way we do our business…. by Christian values.

What ministry/cause do you champion and why?
I attend Adventure Church in Lewis Center, Ohio. Its a non-denominational church.

How did you come to faith in Christ?
We both grew up in Christian homes and had parents that taught us about Jesus.  We both made decisions as teenagers to give our lives to Christ.  That has made all the difference.  We have made our faith an important part of our own family and have instilled those Christian values in each of our children.

How does your faith impact the way you do business?
It affects everything we do,  because Jesus is the center of our lives.  It affects how we deal with customers, train our employees, and how we interact with our community.  Our faith is a part of every decision we make.   It is our hope that people leave our store feeling that something is different about our business.  The difference is Jesus.

What ministry/cause do you champion and why?
We love and value all the young people that work for us.  God has given us the opportunity over the years to work with many teenagers and young adults from all walks of life.  It is rewarding to teach young people how to work hard and influence their lives in a positive way.  Our employees are the best part about our business.

Business Description: Diane Wingerter offers those in Career Transition the strategies and tactics to guide them to a Career and to a Company which they LOVE!  Process spans the entire journey–including how to prepare, select, plan, execute, follow-through & analyze. Together with clients, she creates a plan by design, not by default. This allows her clients to embrace a process infused with prayer and to take control and realize that their future lies in their own hands!

How did you get started in this line of work? In the Corporate setting, Diane served in roles such as Vice President of Human Resources and personally hired over 1,900 individuals along life’s highway.  As Diane combines her hiring perspective–along with her strong sales and marketing experience–she also infuses prayer, scripture and God’s assistance throughout the journey.  Diane’s ‘success-cocktail’ is designed to conquer and expedite the Career-Journey. Thus, her clients transform from “Hunting2Hired” and when that occurs, they give the Glory to God!

How did you come to faith in Christ?  I ‘grew-up’ in the Church environment since elementary school and it has always been a  part of my life. At the age of 6, I was on a live Christian TV Show, which aired on Sundays.  I served in the Youth Ministry and in the Children’s Ministry for a total of six years. Along life’s highway, I was traveling and working in multiple states and became seriously ill.  At that time, I felt the presence of God & Jesus in my recovery and healing and truly know that God was with me.  He will help you, if you ask, through prayer.  So, I live my life as a ‘Prayer Warrior’ with daily Prayer and with Gratitude, always at the forefront of my mind.

How does your faith impact the way you do business? Simple, I base my business decisions on biblical principles and do so, with confidence in my decisions.

What ministry/cause do you champion and why?  Healing is near and dear to me, because of my own experience and that of others who I have prayed for and have received healing. About 3 years ago, I put together a healing prayer guide ‘Healing On The Horizon’ which I send to individuals who are in need of prayer support and guidance.

Please share a story where you saw God move in your business or impact a customer. God gave me the idea to add Faith to my book.  In 2019, when I originally came up with the title and idea to write Hunting2Hired, the elements of scripture and prayer were not in the concept.  In February of 2020, God said to add Faith into the Book, and I said, yes Sir!  So, when I began to write it during late March of 2020…..I moved forward, full-steam ahead and finished the initial manuscript 5-weeks later!

Why do you advertise with Christian Blue Network? Three reasons, I want to support a Christian-Based Publication, I want to be ‘associated’ with like-minded Businesses and Business Owners, and I feel the ‘audience’ will appreciate the fact that Faith is infused into my Book–as well as–throughout my one-on-one Consulting.

Practical Ideas on How to Shine the Light of Christ at Work

Support StaffUncategorized Leave a Comment

If you are looking for practical ways to shine the light of Christ through your business (and personal) life, I offer these suggestions below – through prayer, what you share, how you care, and what you “wear”. Choose which ideas work best work given your situation, then trust God these actions will bear fruit.

Prayer – 1 Thessalonians 5:17 “Be joyful always, pray continually…”

  1. Pray for your clients, vendors, and staff
  2. Plan a weekly staff prayer time and/or devotional
  3. Open and close every meeting in prayer
  4. When a need arises, pray for someone right then, instead of saying “I’ll pray for you”
  5. Offer a prayer for your meal at restaurants; ask your server ahead of time if they have a prayer request you can
    include.
  6. Pray on the full armor of God at the start of your day
  7. Pray Psalm 5:3 – then wait expectantly

Share

  1. Tell your faith story regularly – with believers first – until you are comfortable telling it to others.
  2. If you love someone, tell them, and tell them that God loves them, too.
  3. Share your organization’s core (faith) principles and stories of God’s amazing grace in your company on a “Who
We Are” section of your company website (see https://christianblue.com/wp/about-us as an example)
  4. Blog stories of faith – see https://christianblue.com/wp/category/christian-business-spotlights/
  5. Add a Faith section in your company e-newsletter
  6. Populate social media with Biblical encouragements, mixed in quotes from inspirational leaders. Like our
Christian Blue Network Facebook page and share our distinctively Christian content on your FB page.
  7. Take advantage of holidays like Easter (including Lent), Mother’s and Father’s Days, Memorial Day,
Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas to share the Good News on social media.
  8. Send birthday cards to clients that include a scriptural encouragement.
  9. Company Christmas parties – take time to share the birth of Christ story, or go caroling (see
www.GoCaroling.com). Simply wish people “Merry Christmas”. God’s word never returns void.

Care (Demonstrate the love of Christ)

  1. Promote Christian causes in your organization’s print or e-newsletter
  2. Tell people “God bless you today” verbally, on voicemail, etc.
  3. Collaborate with ministries, other organizations, or individuals on faith-based community initiatives.
  4. Apply the Matthew 18 principle if have an issue with a brother or sister in the Lord, or anyone.
  5. Grow in understanding of faith/work/life balance – check out resources found at www.atworkonpurpose.org.

Wear (Indirect Witnessing Opportunities)

  1. “DO wear your faith on your sleeve” — view advertising as an opportunity to reach clients AND witness – include
Christian symbols, scriptural references in print advertising, web, mobile, and broadcast advertising.
  2. Add a Faith statement or symbol on your business card, brochure (print and digital).
  3. Play Christian music in the background of your waiting room/lobby/office
  4. Place a Bible and other Christian material in your waiting room/lobby/office
  5. Offer Christian giveaway items at your trade show booth
  6. Wear Christian attire at events.
  7. As long as it is in good taste, put a Christian bumper sticker on your car (i.e. www.Upward.org)
  8. Advertise on (and play) Christian radio – many “flipping through dial” come to Christ through radio ministry.
  9. If you haven’t already, advertise in the Christian Blue Network (we’ll help shine your light and tell your story).

If you practice other ways to bring the Good News into your work world, I’d love to hear from you! connect@trustbluereview.com

Marketing Strength Metrics Assessment – A simple marketing tool to highlight gaps in your plan

Support StaffUncategorized Leave a Comment

By Dimalanta Design Group

To say that everything feels a little uncertain right now with the current pandemic would be an understatement. Many business owners are on high alert. Now is the time to assess your marketing strengths and weaknesses to reassess strategies on how to best reach your target audience.

When we first start with a new client, we always start at the beginning by learning where there are gaps in their marketing plan. We use a simple marketing assessment tool called Marketing Strength Metrics that covers 5 areas of marketing that will help you determine very quickly where the biggest gaps are in your marketing.

5 areas of marketing to assess:

1. Branding

Taking a hard look at all areas of your brand from the logo to the messaging is a great place to start when assessing your marketing. Getting feedback from your target audience could also be a great way to determine how people view your brand image and if that matches the messaging.

2. Culture

Oftentimes we forget that company culture ties directly to marketing. If there are a lot of internal disagreements and disunity regarding the direction, vision, or mission, this will severely affect marketing. When all employees and departments in an organization are aligned with the company’s culture, the marketing plan is on the right path to being successful.

3. MarCom

MarCom is short for Marketing Communications, which is everything from design collateral, advertisements, PR strategy, social media, e-newsletters, or any promotional material. Knowing what makes your organization unique needs to match your brand strategy through MarCom.

4. Sales

Over and over again, we see that sales and marketing seem to clash and are typically not on the same page. Sales and marketing strategies should complement and support each other. Staying targeted together by moving in the same direction makes a marketing strategy much more successful.

5. Customer Service

Having exceptional customer service should be a key factor in your marketing strategy. Good customer service means over-delivering, responding timely, and being transparent if there are issues with products. Treat your customers as an individual by building trust and a relationship so they don’t feel like just a number.

Take the test.
Answer the following and rate your organization on a scale of 0–10 with 10 being the best:

  • How confident are you in your organization’s brand?
  • Is your organization’s culture aligned with your brand?
  • Does your MarCom match your brand strategies?
  • How are your sales? Do your sales activities coordinate with your marketing strategies?
  • How well do you deliver on customer service?

So, how did you score in these 5 areas? Hopefully, this will give you some insight into where the gaps are in your marketing strategies. Not sure where to start? Contact us at info@dimalantadesigngroup.com to get a free one-hour consultation from marketing expert, Ernie Dimalanta.

What first inspired you to get into your line of work? And what motivates you to do the work you do still today?
My father started business in 1975,  With six brothers, there was not enough work for all of us so at 19 I went to work in the lawn care field for about 12 years. In 2000, I noticed the company was not doing well for many reasons. At that time only my brother Calvin was working for our dad. I asked my brother, if dad would sell the company to us, would he be alright with me coming back & running company. Our journey started April 1st 2000. We are now in our 21st year owning company together and working side by side. I give our Lord Jesus Christ all the credit for working this out for us. Our father was hard to work for and really didn’t think he would sell company to us, but timing was right-in God’s time.

How did you come to faith in Christ?
My mother is a true saint of God, she always tried to make us go to church when i was young, but during my teenage years I didn’t want anything to do with God. At age 30, after thinking I had the world where I wanted it-it all came crashing down-my marriage failed, lost my new home, car, etc. I left with what I could in the back of my 68 chevy truck after 9 years of marriage. My sons were 9 & 6 at the time. My mind was not good then and God started dealing with my soul & I got saved on July 6, 1998. I was still going thru my divorce at that time but God still helped me quit smoking on July 17, 1998, wasn’t long after that I knew I found something in Christ I never wanted to give up & to this day, I praise him for my salvation. Two years later, I was in business for myself, got custody of my two boys, I know I could not have done this on my own. Had to wait on the Lord for 12 years, but he gave me a wife of 9 years now-so blessed.

How does your faith in Jesus impact the way you do business?
Just as the bible says-do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That is our motto. We let our faith speak for itself-trying to treat others as Christ would.

What ministry/cause do you champion and why?
I am currently on the board at my church, I believe our youth are the future of the church and world so I would say my cause is to help in the youth ministry where I can. I organize a car show yearly with our proceeds going to help youth go to church camp, etc. I don’t see myself as a minister or teacher but willing to go where God leads me.

Finding Work-Life Balance in the Practice of Sabbath

Support StaffEncouragement for Life 1 Comment

By: Dr. Andrew Spencer

Searching the phrase “work-life balance” produces an avalanche of results. The recommendations provided to create a work-life balance vary widely based on the author and the outlet of publication, but the popularity of the question shows that it is a significant problem for many people.

Among other mistaken predictions, economist John Maynard Keynes predicted an abbreviated work week as material prosperity increased. By 2030, he expected the average person’s work to consume as little as 15 hours per week. Despite our material prosperity, Americans continue to work long hours. Our work is stressing us out.

It may help to reexamine why we work. That will, in turn, help determine where the balance between work and the rest of our vocations should be.

The Problem: Over-Working

In 1970, economist Staffan Linder wrote The Harried Leisure Class in which he made the case that as cultures have largely defeated material poverty, they have only become busier. In industrialized societies, there often seems to be an inverse relationship between available leisure time and material wealth. This phenomenon has real social implications in the United States, as it reduces the sense of well-being and can often produce a sense of despair, even in households with a great deal of material wealth.

Linder argues that in “rich countries all slacks in the use of time have been eliminated, so far as is humanly possible. The attitude of time is dictated entirely by the commodity’s extreme scarcity.”

This poverty of leisure time has led to a focus on life hacks and time-saving tricks that can be helpful but often illustrate the poverty of time many experience. Left unchecked, our work can demand all our time and energy, leaving no room for rest. It can rob us of Sabbath. It can diminish our delight in God’s creation.

The reaction to this strain is to look for a technological solution. We try to find an app, a widget, or a process that will help us do more with less. But technology can contribute to the problem rather than the cure. Daylight no longer limits the hours that productive labor can be done outside. Our cell phones make us accessible anytime and any day. The internet allows us to work at home—a great blessing during a pandemic, but it can erase the boundaries between our career and other parts of life.

There are blessings that come with technology as it pushes back the effects of the Fall, as with the healing of diseases, but technology can also take blessings like work and turn them into something less. “Always on” technology can enable our work to become a master no less demanding than Pharaoh. In an attempt to overcome nature’s limitations, we may have allowed ourselves to be conquered. When the busyness of our careers drives us to forgo taking delight in God’s creation, our priorities need to be realigned.

The Solution: Sabbath Rest

Work is a gift from God. Creation was intended for humans to cultivate and keep the garden (Gen 2:15). This call to creativity, innovation, and diligence was not diminished by the Fall; it was made more difficult (Gen 3:17-19). Work is not a part of the curse, but it can become a curse if we fail to observe rhythms of work and rest, which can be seen through God’s gift of the Sabbath.

God gave humanity the Sabbath for our good. The Sabbath was not intended to be a barren duty, but a delightful rest. As Jesus tells the Pharisees, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27) This is not a revision of the fourth commandment, but an explanation that when “the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy” (Ex 20:11b), it was intended to be a blessing for humanity. The blessing of the Sabbath rest is even more explicit in Deuteronomy 5:12–15, since it roots the Sabbath rest in a memorial to Israel’s unjust toil while in slavery in Egypt.

There is no easy solution. Work-life balance will always be a give and take effort. There will be seasons when the demands of work crowd out our need for rest when we have an ox in a well (Luke 14:5). We must regularly return to Christ’s assurances that “Man shall not live by bread alone” (Matt 4:4), trust that we need not be anxious about our life (Matt 6:25-33), and pursue faithfulness in the vocations we have been given.

All of our efforts in life should be done “with a good will as to the Lord and not to man” (Eph 6:6b), which reminds us that we can only serve one master (Matt 6:24). The master we ought to be serving is the one that calls us to come to him as we labor and are heavy laden so that we can get rest (Matt 11:28). Only when we find our identity in Christ and our purpose is honoring him through our work will we gain rest from the relentless demands of our careers.

As Augustine wrote in his Confessions, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in you.”

Human Injustice and Our Response as Christians

Support StaffWord from the President 4 Comments

It has been a very hard few months for our country and world.  The coronavirus pandemic has negatively impacted our financial present and future, and brought fear into the hearts of people everywhere.  Now our entire country is suffering from the aftermath of yet another horrendous act of social injustice – the murder of George Floyd. Every human life is precious and created in the image of God, and deserves the right to be protected.

I have really struggled to find the words to say to the Christian Blue community regarding this situation, and address the re-opened wounds of human and racial injustice that plague our land.  It has made me both sad and angry – two emotions that I generally try to avoid.  But I am compelled to say something, trusting the guidance of the Holy Spirit here.  This situation affects us all.  We can no longer stand on the sidelines of injustice and inequality.  Not as Christians.  Not as brothers and sisters in Christ who hail from every nation, tribe, and tongue.

My purpose here is to address the inhumane action of one man towards another that led to death.  I’m asking that you support our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who are being affected by all this.  Unfortunately, the violent protesting and looting in the aftermath of this crime takes away from the critical message here – the voices of human and racial injustice that need to be heard.

As a Christian, I believe that the church needs to take the lead, by “doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with our God” (Micah 6:8).  We cannot simply point the finger at the other guy.  We cannot change someone else’s heart.  But we can ask the Lord to “search me and know me, and test my anxious thoughts, and see if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way” (Psalm 139:23-24). As much as it depends on me, I can choose to live at peace with all people.

Edmund Burke said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men [people] to do nothing.” We must do something – every believer in Christ must do something to stand up to human injustice, racism, and misuse of force by those in any positions of power.  We need to call sin a sin and stand united against it.

God calls his children to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Our neighbors desperately need us.  May we, God’s people, humble ourselves and pray, and seek His face, and turn from our wicked ways.  Then, as He did with Israel (in this 2 Chronicles 7:14 reference), God promises to hear from heaven, and forgive our sin, and heal our land.

In light of this, here are some action steps we can take as the body of Christ in response:

  1. Encourage your church leadership to begin the dialogue of race relations within the church body.
  2. Let your voice be heard in the judicial system by exercising your right to vote and embracing the summons of jury duty.
  3. Speak up against racist or derogatory comments made by others.
  4. Pray regularly that God in his mercy would heal the racial divide in the Church and our country.

Amen, come Lord Jesus.

3 Essentials To Remember as You Go Back to Work

Support StaffEncouragement for Life 2 Comments

By: John Pletcher

Are you certain you are ready to go back to work?

For many of us, the current season is full of great eagerness and anticipation. Perhaps you’ve been working from home, and now there is the potential of going back to the office soon. Perhaps you were furloughed over previous weeks, but now you are hearing the news of being called back. Some places it’s a reality; in others, it’s still a wishful hope. For everyone everywhere, great patience is still required.

Serious question: Are you sure you’re ready to go back to work?

I know, you’re chomping at the bit. You are probably ready to throw yourself back into your labors with great gusto. And that’s good. Very good! After all, God made you in his image. He wired you for creative productivity. But hold your horses. Pause long enough to ponder. You see, it could be very easy—tempting even—to just plunge back in and go absolutely crazy, bonkers about your labors. You might jump onto the job floor and become utterly consumed, giddy drunk in your endeavors, and utterly overwhelmed with your to-dos.

Before you head back, don’t miss the opportunity to hit reset. With advanced thoughtfulness, you can actually return to your labors with a renewed and strengthened perspective. Consider these three essentials. (I bet you already know these, but it’s really good in times like these to recall essential truths you already know.)

Remember Your Work is a Gift

When God created humans in his image, he supplied his blessing, including that initial call (often dubbed humanity’s cultural mandate) to “rule and to reign.” He also supplied those initial resources. “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth . . .” (Gen 1:27-31). These are serious gifts “from the Father of the heavenly lights” (James 1:17).

In Made to Matter: Devotions for Working Christians, Randy Kilgore reminds us: “It isn’t adoration or statues or even the satisfaction of a job well done that is God’s gift to His children. It’s the work itself!” Timothy Keller, in Every Good Endeavor, supplies motivation: “A biblical understanding of work energizes our desire to create value from the resources available to us. Recognizing the God who supplies our resources, and who gives us the privilege of joining in as cocultivators, helps us enter into our work with a relentless spirit of creativity.”

If we don’t remember our work is a gift as we return to the workplace, we are likely to grow arrogant and too quickly self-reliant. As a result, our creative energies will likely be less than their best.

Remember Your Work is Service to Others, to the Glory of God

This truth is a game-changer when it comes to our purpose and motivation. Under normal circumstances, we struggle to remember such vital truth. We stumble through our busy days with self-serving, push-harder, do-it-for-my-glory perspectives. But during these upcoming days of exciting work comebacks, such self-serving attitudes could be all the craftier and more deceptive. Important reminder: our work is not all about us.

With winsome strokes in The Integrated Life, Ken Eldred reminds us: “The real goal of business is to serve others to the glory of God.” If we are not careful, that pure, simple, life-giving goal could get lost in the dust of our crisis-time comebacks. Let’s re-enter our offices and marketplaces with God-given clarity and fervor. We are there to serve others, to help make God even more famous.

Remember the Importance of Rest

One potential upside for many people during this season of downtime has been exactly that: downtime. Rest. Rejuvenation. Sabbath.

This was God’s brilliant idea on day seven (Gen 2:1-3). The amount of rest many people have been forced to take might be the biggest block of do-nothing that they have experienced since childhood. Oh yes, most of us have rushed to fill the void or been forced to add other side hustles. But no one can disagree. There has been a marked change of pace in work patterns. Less rush. More family time.

With our return to daily labors, there will be the temptation to ramp up, work harder, push more, and drive harder than ever to get ahead. Let’s make certain we do not lose sight of the sacred value of rest, those regular rhythms to which God our Creator called us. He saw the importance of a finish line each week, a holy stop, an intentional time to pause, to celebrate, and to rejuvenate. Let’s not lose sight of the importance of rest.

Remember that work is our Father’s gracious gift. Remember our divine purpose, to serve others for his glory. And remember to “call it a day.” He did.

As we remember these essentials, we are more likely to be truly ready to go back to work.

Sims Investment Management was founded with an emphasis to benefit from the new market landscape. We do this with the highest levels of trust, integrity and respect while always keeping our clients’ best interest as our guiding light. Here at Sims Investment, we want to be more than just your financial advisor, we want to be your friend. In doing so, we will teach you the great truths about your finances so that you may lead a life of greater financial security and personal success.

What first inspired you to get into your line of work? And what motivates you to do the work you do still today?
My mission in life and in my career is to help others lead a life of greater financial security and success. WHAT I do, is not nearly as important as WHY I do it. I run my company with the same values and beliefs that I live by, and that is by being a good and faithful servant to God and to my clients. My WHY is to teach and coach others to recognize and maximize their God given gifts by making my work my ministry. How I live out my purpose, my why, is through educating others. I believe that I can empower others to expand their minds and have faith in the plans that we set in motion, ultimately leading them to reach their personal and financial goals. My hope is that together, we can create a life you’ve always dreamed of living.

How did you come to faith in Christ?
Faith was instilled at me at a very young age through my family and the wonderful community I grew up in at Our Lady of Fatima in Huntington, WV.

How does your faith impact the way you do business?
We work to be positive and rational advisors in a time where clients are bombarded with secular messages that cause them to make poor financial decisions based on emotions.

What ministry/cause do you champion and why?
During the Covid-19 crisis, we started hand writing notes to send out to clients and have sent out close to 100 books by Jon Gordon called Stay Positive. We look at this as our way to get clients to have faith in the bigger plan that God has for us and that optimism is the only real realism. By turning off the secular media cycle, we can listen to God’s voice and word and realize his plan to use the gifts he has blessed us with.  Attached is a photo of one of the rounds of books we sent out.

What first inspired you to get into your line of work? And what motivates you to do the work you do still today?
I first gained interest in being an attorney from watching my father (who was a great role model) negotiate bargaining agreements for a large company in Cincinnati.   Much of my father’s personality flows through my veins, such as being patient and to the point when dealing with critical problems.

How did you come to faith in Christ?
By everyone around me praying for my salvation.  They knew long before I did, how much I needed Christ, and how empty my life was without Him.  Their faithful persistence was rewarded in due time when my heartfelt an overwhelming need to set my life straight and serve the One who created me and all world around me.

How does your faith impact the way you do business?
After 37 years of legal practice, all the local Judges and attorneys know that I am a person of high morals, integrity and professionalism.  My faith has taught me to use my words in my law practice carefully “saying only what you mean” and “meaning what you say”.    Contrary to some other attorneys who have crossed my path, I won’t lie, cheat or steal to get what isn’t deserved for my client, but I will work hard to get what my client deserves legally in the right way.

What ministry/cause do you champion and why?
My household has recently accepted an infant foster child who was born under less than ideal circumstances.  The Word clearly says it is our duty to protect those who cannot protect themselves.  We hope that this child, and any others to follow, will be given their chance to fulfill God’s special purposes for their lives.  All we can do now is water the seedling, and see what harvest God can accomplish with our small offering.

What first inspired you to get into your line of work? And what motivates you to do the work you do still today?
I had worked in the corporate world for almost 23 years when I felt God calling me to leave that arena in 2008.  At first, I was not sure what God’s plan was for me, but eventually He showed me He wanted to lead me in starting a family business.  God knew what He is doing!  This has been an incredible spiritual blessing on my family.  I have been given the opportunity to work with all 3 of my sons, providing me precious time to disciple my sons for many more years than I would have otherwise.  Family life means so much to me and I feel very blessed God provided us the family business.  My hope and prayer is this business will continue for multiple generations.

How did you come to faith in Christ?
I was raised in a small conservative farming community and regularly attended a local church, yet I had never heard about being born again.  I had this false notion that if I relied on my thinking and hard work, then life would go exactly how I thought it should.  By the time I reached the age of 25, I was completely to the end of myself.  This started me on a search to find out what was missing in my life.  About this time God brought into my life some spiritually mature and strong Christians who began to walk with me down the path to Jesus.  It wasn’t much long after when I met my future wife, and we both became born again Christians.

How does your faith in Jesus impact the way you do business?
“Do for others just what you want them to do for you.” Luke 6:31  We have lived this out to the best of our ability over the past 12 years.

What ministry/cause do you champion and why?
There have been two main areas of ministry the Lord has brought to our attention:

The first is feeding the hungry through supporting a local ministry called Project 5-2. They are a conduit of redistribution of food, clothing, Bibles and supplies from God’s hand to front line ministries who at times, in their communities, don’t have the resources to feed and clothe those in need.  http://pro52.org/

The other area of ministry we feel God has led us to is getting the word out on how loving our Heavenly Father is.  I think most Christians deep down in their hearts don’t really understand how much Abba Father loves them!  Once this knowledge moves from someone’s head to the heart, their life will be transformed.  The best resource we have found to help others deeply understand this is an amazing book called  He Loves Me! Learning to Live in the Father’s Affection  (by W. Jacobsen).  When we have the opportunity, we either give people this book or highly encourage them to get a copy.  After reading the book, most people come back and share how its message has really changed their walk with God for the better.  Just this week, we received word about a Christian who was struggling with depression, and reading the book really made an impact.  To God be the glory!  Please do yourself a huge favor…find a copy of this book and read it!!!!
