I remember a book I read called The Poisonwood Bible in which a family of fiercely evangelical missionaries go to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They took with them everything they believed they would need from home, but find nothing but sorrow and loss in the cruelty of the African wild. Nothing works, people die, crops fail, and wars erupt.

At the end of the book, the two surviving children land back on U.S. soil. They exit the terminal and are stopped, awestruck, at the wonder of the yellow striping at the edge of the street. After decades in the wildness and unpredictability of the mission field, this simple painted line slaps them in the face with a culture so organized and so tamed that IT PAINTS YELLOW LINES ON THE SIDES OF ITS ROADS.

I felt that way recently. I lost my phone.

As ridiculous as this comparison may be, for one brief moment I was shattered. The organization of my personal life-culture is pretty much on that phone. For me, it was going from the comfort of an organized environment to the wildness and unpredictability of loss. Loss of important names. The phone numbers that I used to keep in my head, now rest in the marrow of my SIM card…I cannot remember one of them, they were lost. I had lost my schedule. All the addresses. My map to get to places that are new to me. Lost.

Frankly, I am amazed at how bad I felt. After a few hours, the phone was located. But still, the fear reverberated somewhere in my chest. I claim peace. I really have it most of the time. But in this crazy world, most of us have filled every hour of every day to the limit with things that need doing. We are like the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland who keeps looking at his watch muttering, “I’m late, I’m late…

What were the trappings of a highly evolved culture to the missionary sisters in the form of striping on roadways is nothing for us in the 21st century. We believed the Microsoft and Apple “scripture” that said computers and blackberries and cell phones would lighten our workloads, instead, they have allowed us to work around the clock—falling asleep with a half-written email in process, our computers on our laps in bed.

Remember Parkinson’s Law: “Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.” Well, the “time for completion” has reached about 18 hours, seven days a week. Even our Bibles (every version imaginable) is on our phones. So turn now on your Bible App to Exodus 20:18. It says, “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.” Some of you might be able to look back…maybe when you were children when Sunday was a day of rest. You could be chastised by a neighbor if you so much as started your lawn mower on a Sunday. (This was mainly because you would be interrupting his day of rest.) But this is no joke. Sundays were to be quiet and restful—no phones needed.

The Poisonwood Bible, I will tell you, was written by Barbara Kingsolver. I give you this bit of information so you don’t have to Google it, and hopefully, that will give you a few more nanoseconds of peace in your particular day. Meanwhile, I am trying to take better care not to lose my phone. As for that peace, I want so much…maybe after church on Sundays, I won’t turn my phone’s ringer back on, or maybe I’ll just take some time to stare at the yellow lines on the side of the road. That might just do it.

Remembering Those Who Gave Their Lives So Our Nation Could Be Free

As we approach Memorial Day 2018, we are reminded that freedom is never free and that many that have gone before us have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives to protect this country and the freedoms we hold so dear. Nowhere is this better stated than in the words of Abraham Lincoln, as he delivered the Gettysburg address during the height of the Civil War:

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

This Memorial Day, let’s pay tribute to those who gave their lives in service to this country, taking “increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion”, and attend a Memorial Day ceremony or parade in our area. It is certainly altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

Traveling all the way to the Holy Land and experiencing scripture come alive was a great confirmation of what I believe as a Christian. Being able to actually visit the locations of some of the greatest successes and laments of biblical history reinforced my faith of 57 years in Jesus.

My wife, Cindy, and I embarked on our journey April 26 with a group of 31 other people from mostly Cincinnati. Our experienced host, Keith Thomas, from the Vineyard Church in Cincinnati, has led groups to Israel 6-7 times.  After the lengthy flight, we arrived in Israel to meet our local tour guide who narrated all the sites, explained the geography and infused the historical perspective.  Israel is diverse in various religions (Jewish, Messianic Jews, Arab Christian, Muslims), which is why it is important to have a local guide who is educated in the differences. Keith did a great job with more in-depth spiritual aspects by reading scripture and providing time for us to pray.

There were so many highlights of the trip. Seeing ruins that were over 2,000 years old and experiencing the history of Israel was something that I will remember forever. We took a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee where Jesus asked Peter “do you love me?” three times, saw where Jesus taught the Sermon on the Mount, visited Mt. Carmel where Elijah defeated the 400 Prophets of Baal, and also visited Caesarea Philippi where Peter proclaimed that Jesus is Christ. In addition, we were baptized in the Jordan River and were able to float in the Dead Sea. Being in the Garden of Gethsemane and also seeing olive trees over 1,000 years old growing on the Mount of Olives, were some of my favorite parts.

There are many arguments about where the tomb of Jesus actually is, but it has been said to be at the Place of The Skull, which is a big rock that looks like a skull. Our tour guide would give us a scale between 1 and 4 of how accurate they believed the locations were, but just being in the vicinity of where Jesus walked, lived and died was so powerful to me.

When we visited Shiloh where the Ark of the Covenant laid before it was taken, we were able to worship there in song and spend some quiet time in prayer. This was an incredibly holy place where the last tabernacle stood. Only the High Priest was allowed to go into the Holy of Holies where the Ark of the Covenant was. While we were there, I was overcome by the presence of God. I could feel the holiness of God all around me. There are times in our lives that God allows us to feel His presence more than others, and that was a defining moment for me.

Since the Jewish people have not accepted Jesus as the Messiah, they gather at the Wailing Wall to read the Old Testament and pray for the Messiah to come. Men and women have separate areas where they were allowed to be on the Wall. People from all over the world have prayed there. I was able to pray for my family and friends. My feeling around the Wailing Wall was probably quite different than many others – I was deeply saddened for the Jewish people and prayed that they would come to accept Christ as Lord.

My advice to you if you are considering visiting the Holy Land is to be flexible and be open to whatever God wants you to experience. Don’t try to be in control, and allow God to lead! But most importantly, go. Go and walk where Jesus walked to experience His presence in a whole new way.

  • How did you come to faith in Christ?

My sister invited me to attend church with her at the age of 15. My life and family environment was so dark and broken, that when Christ was revealed to me by the Holy Spirit there was no doubt in my heart I had been offered hope eternal. That light burns brighter every day, fueling every ounce of who I am and how I serve others.

  • How does being a Christian affect how you conduct your ministry?

Christ’s call for us to achieve greatness by being a servant to all guides every relationship I build in every area of my life. Through serving in hospice nursing for 15 years, the Lord gave me the honor of serving the richest/poorest, faith-filled/faithless, inner city/rural, and every unique heart that fills our communities. I put that experience to use as our community-based ministry serves in every crack and corner of the Cincinnati area, building our focus to the story spoken by each life.

  • What ministry/cause is near and dear to your heart, and why?

My heart is that each life would know their value in impacting the life of another. That is why I learn the story of every mentor and student to best align their path together, as they shall both be redeemed and sharpened through the years they spend investing in one another.

  • What is one interesting thing about you or your ministry that most people would not know? 

My wife also owns a dance studio that deeply and persistently impacts the Oxford, Ohio community. Our older teen daughters also teach there.

Isolation is the great obstacle our ministry seeks to overcome, as many men, women, and children have no redemptive relationship. It is also true of partnering with other gospel-centered organizations, that we are stronger when we join together, as “a cord of three strands is not easily broken.”

Holy Week 2018 | Word From the President

We are in the midst of Holy Week 2018, which began with Palm Sunday and includes Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. It is the last week of Lenten season, and ushers in Easter (or Resurrection) Sunday.

Holy Week is special for Christians as it marks the last days of Jesus Christ on earth. According to the Bible, Jesus rode on a donkey into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, washed the feet of His disciples on Holy Thursday, and was crucified on Good Friday before His resurrection on Easter.

Our prayer here at the Christian Blue Network is that God would embolden your heart and comfort your mind in a fresh, new way to more fully know, love, and serve Christ this week and beyond. As you prepare to commemorate Christ’s death on the cross on Good Friday, remember this… Sunday’s coming, and with it, the unspeakable joy of new life in Christ that we as believers thankfully get to experience every day.

St. Valentine, the Real Story

Flowers, candy, red hearts and romance. That’s what Valentine’s day is all about, right? Well, maybe not.

The origin of this holiday for the expression of love really isn’t romantic at all—at least not in the traditional sense. Father Frank O’Gara of Whitefriars Street Church in Dublin, Ireland, tells the real story of the man behind the holiday—St. Valentine.

“He was a Roman Priest at a time when there was an emperor called Claudias who persecuted the church at that particular time,” Father O’Gara explains. ” He also had an edict that prohibited the marriage of young people. This was based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers because married soldiers might be afraid of what might happen to them or their wives or families if they died.”

“I think we must bear in mind that it was a very permissive society in which Valentine lived,” says Father O’Gara. “Polygamy would have been much more popular than just one woman and one man living together. And yet some of them seemed to be attracted to Christian faith. But obviously the church thought that marriage was very sacred between one man and one woman for their life and that it was to be encouraged. And so it immediately presented the problem to the Christian church of what to do about this.”

“The idea of encouraging them to marry within the Christian church was what Valentine was about. And he secretly married them because of the edict.”

Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies against command of Emperor Claudius the second. There are legends surrounding Valentine’s actions while in prison.

“One of the men who was to judge him in line with the Roman law at the time was a man called Asterius, whose daughter was blind. He was supposed to have prayed with and healed the young girl with such astonishing effect that Asterius himself became Christian as a result.”

In the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution of a beating, stoning, and finally decapitation all because of his stand for Christian marriage. The story goes that the last words he wrote were in a note to Asterius’ daughter. He inspired today’s romantic missives by signing it, “from your Valentine.”

“What Valentine means to me as a priest,” explains Father O’Gara, “is that there comes a time where you have to lay your life upon the line for what you believe. And with the power of the Holy Spirit we can do that —even to the point of death.”

Valentine’s martyrdom has not gone unnoticed by the general public. In fact, Whitefriars Street Church is one of three churches that claim to house the remains of Valentine. Today, many people make the pilgrimage to the church to honor the courage and memory of this Christian saint.

“Valentine has come to be known as the patron saint of lovers. Before you enter into a Christian marriage you want some sense of God in your life—some great need of God in your life. And we know, particularly in the modern world, many people are meeting God through his Son, Jesus Christ.”

“If Valentine were here today, he would say to married couples that there comes a time where you’re going to have to suffer. It’s not going to be easy to maintain your commitment and your vows in marriage. Don’t be surprised if the ‘gushing’ love that you have for someone changes to something less “gushing” but maybe much more mature. And the question is, is that young person ready for that?”

“So on the day of the marriage they have to take that into context,” Father O’Gara says. “Love—human love and sexuality is wonderful, and blessed by God—but also the shadow of the cross. That’s what Valentine means to me.”

I was a volunteer firefighter for 17 years, a softball coach at Milton-Union schools and summer teams for 13 years, and currently umpire softball and volleyball from all ages up to college.

In our newsletter this month, David Kithcart, Features Director for the Christian Broadcasting Network’s 700 Club, shares the real story of the man behind the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday.  St. Valentine, a priest in Rome in the 3rd century, gave his life defending the right of men and women to marry, and be joined in the bond of monogamous Christian marriage for life. I encourage you to take a couple minutes to read “St. Valentine, the Real Story “. This is certainly a timely topic, especially given the battle currently being waged in our culture regarding marriage.

Since love is the theme for this season, we are also reminded in 1 John 4:19 where true love truly begins…that we are able to love others because God, our Heavenly Father, first loved us. Later in the newsletter, I share a story about the “love of my life” helping to open my eyes, encouraging me to enjoy the present, and “Live in the Moment”. I trust you will enjoy this story as well.

And finally, as we seek to be a witness to a watching world of our faith in Jesus Christ, let’s also remember our Savior’s words of admonition to love our brothers and sisters in Christ:

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”  John 13:35

What Was Your Big Rock in 2017? | Word From the President

As we begin the New Year, it’s always appropriate to take a moment to reflect back on the previous twelve months, and thank God for his provisions and protection. What’s even better, though, is to intentionally “mark” a moment (or moments) from the past year where God made clear His purposes (i.e. through answered prayer or God-incidence), so that you never forget the lesson for the rest of your life.

An example of “marking a moment” can be found in the Old Testament book of Joshua (chapter 4, verses 1-7, 24). After wandering the desert for 40 years, the Israelites finally entered the promised land, crossing the Jordan River on dry ground, after God had miraculously stopped the flow of water upstream.

When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priest are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.”

So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ Tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.”

The rocks from the Jordan served as a visible reminder for the Israelites (and the rest of the world) that with God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26b)

This begs the question – is God still willing, in our own life situation, to perform some kind of miracle like He did with the Israelites? And if so, would we recognize it as such? When it happens, what “rock” will we set up to remember it and give glory to God?

Was there a moment, situation, or event you can point to in 2017 that deserves this consideration?

A couple years ago, there was such a situation for one person I know – Sheri Lawson, Director of Healthy Beginnings, who was part of an executive round-table group to which I belong.

Here’s the story:

Healthy Beginnings’ ultrasound machines were outdated and their image quality was diminishing. As a pro-life prenatal care provider, the quality of the ultrasound images is critical in helping patients connect with their unborn babies.

Their ultrasound manager performed a “demo” with several machines in order to determine what was needed and how much it would cost to replace the existing machines. The machines determined to be the best fit were $168,000 each, and they needed 3 units. Sheri wrote,

$504,000 seemed like an impossible dream. In addition, 2015 has not been an easy year for Healthy Beginnings, and, with other more pressing issues, the ultrasound project is just not at the top of the priority list. But the Lord knew our need and has acted amazingly on our behalf. The sales rep for the perfect machines contacted us in September to inform us that we could purchase 3 of the “demo” units for a total cost of $135,000. The bad news is we have just 2 months to raise the money. It would be easy to think there is no way to make this happen, but I just keep thinking NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD. We have to see what God will do.

Sheri contacted everyone on her list, and prayed. And God answered. Sheri wrote:

I still stand in absolute awe of how God worked; He brought together people who wanted to invest in this project in the most amazing ways and we had more money than we needed before the deadline.

After celebrating with her the outcome, I encouraged Sheri that she should mark this as her big “rock” for the year, like the Israelites did to remember God’s faithfulness after crossing the Jordan River. In a follow-up email, she wrote:

Thanks also for the encouraging word about the ultrasound project being a rock. It had blessed me many times.

After encouraging Sheri about her rock, I began to ask, “What was my big rock?” Although I cannot point to as a dramatic an answer to prayer as Sheri’s, there was one moment that happened during my morning devotional time that same year which stands out. In reading Psalms, I came across a verse I have read a dozen of times before, but this time, it jumped off the page.

In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation. (Psalms 5:3)

This verse has provided me renewed hope – that God not only hears my prayers, but that I can share with Him my requests, and then wait in anticipation for His answer. That simple revelation colored my world, and awakened in me the importance of moment by moment trust in God through prayer.

This was my rock – and I “mark the moment” here as an encouragement to all, and so I will remember it forever.

Every day we must wake up for a new fight, put our armor on, shake off the past, and focus on what lies in front. Sometimes we have huge victories – like raising $135,000 – and sometimes the triumphs are in the character that was built – like the impact Psalm 5:3 has had on me. Our opponents may seem unstoppable, and there will be defeats, but we are never alone and have nothing to fear when God leads us, our family, and our team.

How many of your goals are built around what you want to accomplish as opposed to who you want to become?

The plans of the diligent surely lead to advantage (Prov. 21:5).

In the mid-sixties there was a successful television series called Run for Your Life. Actor Ben Gazzara plays a lawyer who is told by his doctor in the first episode that he will die in nine to eighteen months. Gazzara’s character decides to do all of the things he has never had time to accomplish.

The program becomes a series of plays in which this lawyer meets a wide variety of people, from bums riding the rails to orphans. He becomes a man who seems to be looking for something while the clock is running out:

I would suggest Gazzara’s character is really looking for purpose and significance—to find what is really important in life. In each encounter, he tries to find answers by looking more at who people are rather than what they have accomplished.

Developing Goals Consistent with Your Primary Purpose

As we begin 2018 and consider our goals and New Year’s resolutions, how many of them are built around what we want to accomplish as opposed to who we want to become? To which approach is our significance tied?

In his book The Call, Os Guinness writes of an amazing truth:

The truth that God calls us to himself so decisively that everything we are, everything we do and everything we have is invested with a special devotion and dynamism lived out as a response to his summons and service.

Guinness differentiates between our primary and secondary callings. Our primary calling is to become a disciple of Christ.

Growing in Christ-likeness does not involve a list of “to-dos” we can check off. Our primary calling is about a significant process of transformation that is happening to all Christians as the Holy Spirit shapes their characters to the likeness of Christ. Theologians call this process sanctification.

Guinness suggests that in everything we do we should think, speak, live, and act entirely for Christ. Our primary calling “to be” should lead without fail to what we do. These two are inseparable.

The thing to remember is that who we are drives what we do, not the other way around.

It is through these secondary callings “to do” that we fully integrate God’s primary call into all areas of life. For followers of Christ, these secondary callings should lead us to find our unique life purpose, in order to use our particular gifts and abilities to their utmost for God’s glory in four distinct areas:

  • Our families
  • Our churches
  • Our communities
  • Our vocations

What Will You Become This Year?

As we think through our goals for the year ahead, we should not leave out “character goals.” These goals are vital to our growth as a spouse, parent, child, friend, boss, or employee. Try asking yourself these questions:

  1. What would I like to become?
  2. What one thing would I like God to change in me?
  3. What character quality—if developed—would make me a better parent, sibling, friend, etc.?

However we answer these questions, we need to see the importance of what we are doing from an eternal perspective.

The Apostle Paul tells his disciple, Timothy:

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing (2 Tim. 4:7-8).

Paul had this larger perspective, that of seeing everything he accomplished flowing out of his relationship with Christ.

We need to reject our culture’s insistence that the ends justify the means, and that at the end of the day the only thing that matters is what you have accomplished. This is truly the road to ruin.

While we may not have the same health prognosis as Ben Gazzara, we are each “running for our lives” as we seek to live out our purpose in a precious, limited amount of time on earth. So, in this new year let us, as Hebrews 12:1-2 exhorts,

…throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.

  • How did you come to faith in Christ?

It was a process – not an event that took place in my 30’s. My mother took me to church as a child, later I went with friends from my neighborhood and eventually my mom just sent me. I say this to let you know that there were seeds planted along the way.

Through a series of circumstances that only God can weave – I sent my son to a Baptist pre-school and kindergarten. He would sing Christian songs and knew many Bible verses. He would come home with “Jesus is the Way” stickers. At the time I was not a believer – I believed there was a God but not the whole Jesus “thing”. But God kept tugging at my heart. Several years later I began to believe that there was more but I didn’t know what that more was so I began to read books on religion and Christianity. Amazingly (again) I mentioned this to a friend who encouraged me to read some books by Frank Peretti. For the first time I could visualize good and evil. I began reading the Bible – not sure what I would find in it but thinking there was something. Fast forward another year or so and I kept driving by a small church and every time I drove by I thought I should stop there – and one day I did. I knocked at the door – no one answered – as I started to leave the Pastor called to me. He and I talked for quite awhile and I shared with him all my misgivings about this Jesus. He invited me to attend the church service the following Sunday. I did but what I still remember most vividly was beginning to cry about a ½ mile from the church and I cried through that entire service. It was still several months before I hit my knees and asked Jesus into my life. I have never looked back and my life is more amazing then I could have ever imagined. Today I cannot imagine walking into any day without seeking God’s guidance first – asking for the right thoughts, words and actions as I go through the day.

  • How does being a Christian affect how you conduct your business?

The two greatest commands Jesus left us is Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind. And love your neighbor as yourself. We put God first in everything we do. Through that prism, our staff comes together to honor God for how He’s blessed each of us. We’re a family and we routinely pray for each other and lift each other up. We also honor God by loving and caring for His people, our clients. We pray for them and their circumstances, good and bad, and take seriously the role we play as stewards with what God has blessed them.

  • What ministry/cause is near and dear to your heart, and why?

There are many ministries that we support – I think it is important to support both Christian and secular organizations. I believe we need to be an example in the community and we cannot always do that if we only give to Christian ministries. The ones that are probably most dear are ones that focus on children. There is so much need – not just for money but for our time and prayer.

  • What is one interesting thing about you or your business that most people would not know?

While progress has been made in our field, women still only make up a small percentage of advisors (17%) and even fewer own investment firms. Yet financial analysts have found women-owned firms are more profitable, and female advisors connect better with clients because women tend to be good communicators and are adept at understanding wealth through the lens of family values and goals.

To not only have a presence in the Christian community but to support it. I believe that we have goods and services that are often unique.

Taking Care of Employees | Word From the President

One of my favorite traditions at Christmas is to read or watch the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol” (the Playhouse in the Park here in Cincinnati, by the way, does an amazing rendition of this timeless tale). A Christmas Carol tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an old miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come.

Scrooge, as his name indicates, treats people coldly, especially those closest to him, most vividly displayed in how he deals with his most faithful employee, Bob Cratchit. Cratchit, as you may recall, labors diligently to simply provide for the basic needs of his wife and children, most notably the youngest member of the Cratchit family, Tiny Tim. A sickly, yet hopeful, small boy, Tiny Tim’s life hinges in the balance of Scrooge’s transformation into a better man.

As a business leader, I am aghast (and yet slightly amused) at how Dickens portrays the gruff Scrooge. His contempt for Christmas is displayed in his famous reply “Bah Humbug!” to greetings of “Merry Christmas”, and begrudgingly giving Bob Cratchit the day off for Christmas. Yet after the visits from the Ghosts, especially the haunting visions of the future shown to Scrooge by the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, Ebenezer Scrooge is miraculously transformed into a kinder, gentler man, and gives lavishly to everyone he has previously neglected.

The highlight of this transformation is Scrooge’s willingness to increase Bob Cratchit’s salary and send his family the biggest goose in town for their Christmas feast. For Scrooge, being given the opportunity to see how his actions could impact the future lives of the people around him – and especially his employee’s family – was truly a gift.

As business leaders, we are not afforded this luxury of peering into the future to see the impact of the decisions we make. But we do have a Guide Book that instructs us to “know the condition of your flocks” (Proverbs 27:23), and we are exhorted in the following passage from the Apostle Paul to be generous on all occasions…

“But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7)

Taking good care of our employees is a way for us to demonstrate to a watching world the love of Christ in action. As believers in Christ in business, let’s lead the way in taking care of our employees, shall we? Let’s begin by being generous in word and deed this Christmas, then we can, in good conscience, join Tiny Tim and the transformed Ebenezer Scrooge in declaring…

“God bless us, every one!”
